The medicine opens a window. How you prepare for that experience matters. Preparation is not a formality — it creates the therapeutic foundation for what follows.

Most ketamine clinics conduct a brief intake and move directly to treatment. The Ketamine Layering Effect™ protocol is built differently. Three dedicated preparation sessions with Amelia precede every course of treatment. We use that time to understand the patterns you want to work with, clarify what has kept you stuck, and develop meaningful intentions for the work ahead.
Preparation gives the experience context. You are not simply arriving for a ketamine session and hoping something meaningful happens. You arrive knowing what you are ready to explore, while remaining open to what may emerge.
Without a therapeutic container, the experience may be profound but disconnected from anything specific you wanted to work on. Integration becomes harder when there is no foundation to build from. The work has nowhere clear to begin.
You arrive knowing exactly what you are working on and why. Amelia knows your patterns, your history, and your intentions. The session has direction from the first moment. Every subsequent session builds on what came before.
The field of psychedelic-assisted therapy broadly recognizes that preparation and integration are central to meaningful outcomes. The medicine is one component. The therapeutic work surrounding it shapes what the experience becomes.
Intention setting is an important part of preparing for ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. An intention is not a goal or a wish. It is a way of naming what you are bringing into the session and what you may be ready to explore.
Amelia works with every client to develop intentions that are meaningful, specific, and aligned with both the personal and professional dimensions of their life. This work begins in the first preparation session and deepens across all three before any medicine is involved.
Specific rather than vague. Honest rather than aspirational. Rooted in what you actually feel rather than what you think you should feel. The most effective intentions name something real — a pattern, a relationship, a part of yourself that has been inaccessible.
Vague, performance-oriented, or disconnected from genuine feeling. Intentions that are too broad give the session no direction. Intentions that are too achievement-focused miss the emotional layer entirely.
High-achieving clients often arrive with intentions framed around performance. Amelia gently guides this toward the emotional layer beneath — because performance issues are rarely the root, and the work is most powerful when it reaches the root.
Your intention for session one is rarely your intention for session six. As the work deepens, the intentions become more precise, more honest, and more specific to the core patterns that have been driving everything else. This evolution is part of the layering effect.
Alongside your medical provider's guidance, these are the non-medical steps Amelia recommends to help you arrive ready:
Every client in The Ketamine Layering Effect™ protocol completes three 50-minute preparation sessions with Amelia before their first KAP session. These sessions are not intake appointments. They are the beginning of the therapeutic work itself.
History and Pattern Mapping
A comprehensive review of your personal and professional history — not to diagnose or categorize, but to map the patterns that have brought you here. What survival responses developed early. What has been tried before, what was helpful, and what still feels unresolved. What you are carrying that you have never said out loud to anyone.
Intention Setting and Goal Alignment
Working with Amelia to develop specific, honest intentions for your KAP sessions — aligned with both your personal healing and your professional goals. Safety protocols reviewed. Questions about the experience answered. Any concerns about vulnerability, confidentiality, or the process addressed directly.
Trust Building and Final Preparation
The final session before medicine. Reviewing and refining your intentions. Walking through exactly what to expect on the day of your first session. Strengthening the therapeutic relationship and making sure you feel prepared for the experience ahead.
Amelia came to ketamine-assisted psychotherapy through her own family's experience. She knows what it means to arrive at a treatment carrying something heavy and uncertain. Every preparation session is designed to meet you exactly where you are — not where you think you should be.
Preparation sessions are available in Amelia's private Westlake Village office, serving clients throughout Ventura County, the Conejo Valley, and greater Los Angeles.
